A Game of Phones

After losing its place as the manufacturer of the most popular, based on monthly sales, smartphone in the world, Apple has retaken its spot on the smartphone throne. According to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Apple has regained the top spot in the global best selling smartphone list thanks to the success of the iPhone 8. Rounding out the list of suitors battling to overthrow Apple’s iPhone 8 include the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus as well as the Xiaomi Redmi 5A.

While Apple and Samsung have long dominated the smartphone market, new competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei have gained market share around the world. Both smartphone manufacturers have significant share of the smartphone market in India and China.

Importance

In the QA world, knowing which smartphones are being bought and used the most is vital to choosing the right testing devices for any QA campaign. Both the hardware and software specifications of smartphones have an impact on the performance and overall manner that applications and websites operate.

Failing to test on devices that represent one’s market or audience could allow a series of bugs to tank the functionality, user experience, and overall performance of an app or website. Therefore, testing on the most used devices is extremely important.

Since new models are launched every year, the smartphone landscape is continuously changing requiring both development and QA teams to stay up-to-date in order to develop the best product.

What to do?

Building a library of testing devices is important for any organization looking to test their app or websites. While testing on real devices provides full testing capabilities like assessing geolocation features, user experience, and more, building a robust testing library can be expensive due to high purchase costs. Therefore, many organizations turn to third-parties for quality assurance testing.
